If...Then...
In preparation for “If…Then…,” Anne Beffel cut phrases out of newspapers, books, and other texts about war and peace, and pasted them onto playing cards. She chose these particular phrases for their descriptive power and poetic potential. Then, over the course of several days at sites across Manhattan, Beffel asked passersby to create poetry by mixing and matching pairs of cards. Many conversations, as well as poems, were born out of this playful matching game, which often revealed participants’ sorrows, hopes, and dreams about war, peace, and humanity.
